(Minghui.org) Ms. Wang Shuying, a Falun Gong practitioner, was sentenced by a local court to three years in prison on March 10, 2017, for filing a criminal complaint against former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin for ordering the persecution of Falun Gong.
She appealed the verdict, citing an unfair trial, but an intermediate court upheld the verdict on May 11, without holding the hearing that Ms. Wang's lawyers had requested.
Ms. Wang's lawyer and her family submitted the appeal again on June 6, the day before she was transferred to Heilongjiang Women's Prison.
Family Has No Place to Turn
During Ms. Wang's last hearing on March 7, one of her lawyers was removed from the courtroom by bailiffs after insisting that the judge violated legal procedures.
The other lawyer left when the conversation with the judge about the violation started to heat up and the bailiffs stood next to him, ready to remove him, too.
The judge continued the trial, despite Ms. Wang's protests, and even refused to allow her to defend herself.
Afterward, Ms. Wang's family contacted multiple agencies to complain about the judge and the court procedures, but they were given the runaround. When they visited the Office of Letters and Calls at the intermediate court, the officer simply returned their complaint to them after reading it.
No one would see them at the Municipal People's Congress office in Jiamusi City. The family had to slide the complaint letter under the door.
When they called the Disciplinary Inspection and Supervision Office of Jiamusi City, the family was told that they had no judicial power over the court.
The family visited the office of the Jiamusi City People's Procuratorate, only to be told: “Don't come here anymore, we don't deal with this.”
Continuing to Appeal
On June 5, Ms. Wang's family visited her in the detention center. They were told that she was going to be taken to Heilongjiang Women's Prison. Ms. Wang's lawyer reviewed her case with her during the same visit. Ms. Wang decided to continue to appeal her sentence.
